Optimism and pessimism are both categories of fatalism. The optimist says it will turn out fine, the pessimist says it won't, but both agree to the fact that the outcome is independent from the action they embark on - or don't embark on. The realist point of view, that I prefer, sees things differently. The realist looks for the good, finds it, and acts accordingly. Thus he brings meaning into the world. There is no point in saying that the glass is half full. There is no point in saying that the glass is half empty either. The point is to actually drink from it. Realism works by virtue of the fact that it deals with the real. It works. It just needs to be put into practice. Mathijs van Alstein |
