I found this board with the quote at an entrance corridor of a school. The quote in German reads, "Optimism is obligatory". The public school is named after the philosopher who apparently said the quoted line here. He was an Austrian Jewish who left the country in 1937. He taught at this school from 1930 to '33. I don't now want to research too much about his philosophy nor in which context this quote originally appeared. Today the school's neighborhood developed into one of the Vienna's most populated area with migrants. Up to 70% or 80% of the pupils are from families of other origins, many are the second or the third generation. In any case, apart from its initial context, it bothers me to see this quote hanging at an entrance of a school. Hope someone will cover-spray it and write a new line instead soon. ![]() |
